our vet is recommending a change to some fairly new pads on my park horse - - a pad developed by MYRON MCLANE.
Has anyone else used these? they are supposed to help bring more blood supply to the foot as is has a "frog" support in the pad and is also supposed to help with any heel tenderness issues horse might have.

My horses have not needed pads until my mother's gelding foundered. Since last year he had a great pad made of equithane on which was switched to a leather last time and he immediately became uncomfortable and lame. We had the farrier come out and put the package on he had before, heartbar shoe with the equithane pads...

What is the pad you speak of made of?

Does your horse have any of the symptoms they are saying this pad corrects? Are you having problems? I have always been one to not fix what isn't broken...and I leave the farrier work to my farrier not my vet for various reasons here.

Yes we had a small problem - - thus the visit from our equine lameness specialist
he believes that the EP horses with the pads on are having their center of gravity "changed" and it is putting more pressure on the heel of the foot, and that the plain pads are keeping the frog from making enough contact with the ground (& since the frog-ground contact helps maintain blood supply, this is not a good thing). he spent time with the farrier and suggested she go barefoot for some weeks and then we change to this pad (looks like a plastic to me ..... I will find a link & post it) that offers a frog-support section. the horse is so barely "off" it is not usually noticeable - - but I am lucky enough to have a trainer who notices small imperfections
I am ordering some of these for the farrier to put on her - - will see how it goes

I have seen those in my farrier's truck....when I went through it! smile.gif hahaha....

They sound to be something that you totally could use. It is interesting what we do when shoeing the horses to their hooves...sometimes good, sometimes bad.

But it is great that you have a trainer that can and does pickup on the littlest "off" step. I noticed my mother's gelding was walking just a little wrong, no one else saw it until I pointed it out. Good eyes in the barn are priceless!

I hope it works out for you and please let me know how you like those pads.

When properly applied the Myron McClane pads are a nice pad for frog pressure in some circumstance. I have preferred an equibuild pourin pad on most of my clients horses, but used the MM pad a few years ago with good results.

It can be used about the same a a heartbar without being made to make a perfect heartbar.
