I just heard from someone who entered that The Tevis Cup, Wester States Ride was cancelled. They cancelled mostly because of access to Forest Hill Road and firs safety than air quality though the air quality is not very good either. They need that road clear for emergencies I guess and having 150 riders, crews, spectators, etc. is not ideal for the present conditions.

Regards,

With the out of control fire in the Auburn/Foresthill canyon they had no choice but to cancel Tevis, as I believe the fire is burning part of the trail or the area around Western States Trail. Its a real bummer. Not to mention making it look like a war zone around here.

Really? Is this first hand knowledge or are you just reading the website? My next door neighbor is up there fighting this fire and his wife has told us that containment of that fire is predicted to happen sometime in the next 2 weeks! Definitely way too dangerous to be having an endurance race. Besides rerouting the trail would make the ride longer than 100 miles. Not to mention that this fire could change direction at any time.

It's sad but I think it's the best decision cause the air quality is so bad. I can't even go outside without getting a headache.

We went up to Squaw after they cancelled the Western States ( June 28 ) and heard some 4th hand information that the Western States Trail people were trying to get the trail declared a National Monument . If that happens they can call in additional fire fighters and there would be federal help restoring the trail after . It won't happen for this year but hopefully it will in the future . The runners were concerned the trail might not be restored in time for next year if the fire burns on it .

This is the first time the Tevis has been cancelled in it's 53 year history and the first time the Western States was cancelled in it's 35 year history - sad year for endurance riders and runners

Just saw the announcement on Ridecamp, and in reading the responses of those who live nearby it certainly sounds like the best decision. It is just very sad and unfortunate - I feel sorry for those who had planned this year as their 'year to try', hopefully they will be able to try again another year.

I'm sorry to read this news but I hope there'll be Tevis Cup next year. Sending good thoughts to all living in the area of fires.
