My status

I'm looking at a very reasonably priced Port Bask daughter, out of a Khemosabi daughter that is 15 years old and never been bred. I know you're not supposed to breed a mare for the first time past the age of 10, so I'm curious as to what would happen if I try. I really like her, she's huge, well trained, and one of the loveliest mares I've found for her price. The owner says she cycles regularly, although I know from personal experience that that doesn't really mean anything, I would like to know your guys' opinion on this matter, if you know anyone who has done it, or the procedure for taking cultures to find out. I'm half tempted just to buy her for riding, but if this is a big no-no on breeding then I will pass her up. Thanks! PM for pics if you would like to see this mare.

One of my best broodmares had her first foal at 15.

She was an Azlaf Omar daughter.
She conceived and foaled with no problems. Had many foals after that and had a show career as well.

I am breeding a fifteen year old maiden mare this month as well.

GET HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have no qualms buying her as a broodmare.

Hmmmmmm is she in California? biggrin.gif I loved Port Bask!

She is in Cali, and she is just gorgeous. Unfortunately for myself I'm number 2 on the list, so I'll get her this weekend if the first buyer falls through. I really want to turn up the heat on the owner since she hasn't gotten any money yet, but she is willing to wait it out.

Here is how I bought my last horse......I was not going to let anyone else get her....

Call the people, find out if they have a paypal account and buy her! Offer to pay the paypal percentage if they flinch at all.

If I have a horse for sale money talks..............

Get the mare

age just makes it harder not impossible.
I had a 14 yr old and an 18 yr maiden mare both foal this year. The 14 yr old took last yr on her first cycle, the 18 yr old took 2 breeding seasons to get her bred. Live cover on both. Both have happy healthy foals this year. If you like her as a riding horse too i would definitely say go for it, but I bet if you try and work with a vet if you have trouble, you can get her bred.

friends just settled a 17 or 18 year old maiden. A stallion owner friend has shipped semen to a couple older maidens with good success.. I think one was 19.

It can be done- I have known a few rare cases of twenty year old maidens before. MAKE SURE THAT YOU USE A GOOD REPRO VET THOUGH. Don't skimp- do a full repro exam on her to make sure everything is working well. Culture, Biopsy, Cytology. A fibrous uterus will have a hard time carrying full term and an infection from windsucking(through her vulv@ because of conformation and having a working life) can do permanent damage. Older cervix's are less flexible and so the older maiden mare is more likely to retain fluid and have inflammation after being bred live or by AI they also have a tendency to twin so it is important to track the cycle and makes sure only one follicle is released that that fluid is not being retained in the few days after ovulating.

My Freedoms Flame daughter was a 9 year old maiden and got in foal no problems. I don't know on Lacinda yet. Katie Rose was a lost cause (or so they say, soon as I get her to my place going to go to work on her). I would try it, its worth it if the mare is what you want. And if she is priced right what do you have to lose.

It is not a big no no. Just get her cultured and US before . They can see if there is fluid, at 15 I seriously doubt it!! That is not too old at all.

Also get the mare, paypal her the money

Here is my Port Bask daughter RL Carolina (Out of Cal O bask daughter Calmira)
She would be around...19 now (maybe older) This mare had all the snort and blow in the world (NO BAG NEEDED) and was truly athletic PLUS a live in your tent dispo. Gorgeous face too, they usually have quite large eyes.

I have had many mares retain fluid Lacinda- regardless of age- young and old. It depends on if they were "soaked" on breeding, their cervix and uterine tone and many other variables.
