I know Irene only checks in occasionally here, but I'm a little worried because there is a fire in the Midpines area of Yosemite and a evacuation advisory has been issued. If anyone hears from her, please let us know.
Hope you all is well Irene, my thoughts are with you and your family.
Fire burning west of Yosemite (07-26) 16:03 PDT -- A 1,000-acre wildfire burning about 30 miles west of Yosemite Valley is threatening more than 150 homes as it burns in steep terrain on both sides of the Merced River, fire officials said today.
About 150 homes in the Midpines community are under an evacuation advisory, where residents are being told to prepare to leave their homes with 30 minutes' notice, officials said. Another roughly 300 homes could be threatened if the fire continues to spread, said Daniel Berlant, a spokesman for state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The blaze, named the Telegraph Fire, began burning Friday in the Merced River drainage. The cause is under investigation. It was five percent contained today.
Fire crews were using helicopters, air tankers, bulldozers and fire engines to counter the blaze. A record-setting 2,093 wildfires have ravaged California since June 20, feeding on extremely dry vegetation during a time that historically had not been considered high fire season.
"Late July and August, this is when we typically start to see wildfires open up across the state," Berlant said.
