Just curious as to how many of you take a chance on the unknown trainers - the small guys or gals with a whole lot of talent, and a lot of caring for your horse. Speak up - I'd love to hear your stories!! Pondering this as I made a rather large decision for our stallion - to keep him with his very talented young lady trainer vs. sending him out for reining. She's trained and shown with some top folks - and knows her stuff. Best yet - what she doesn't know, she's willing to learn - and she never treats you as if she knows it all. Reason for this is I've had a few incidents with my boy in training where it was a bad match - trainer vs. horse - and horse ended up on the losing end, mistrustful, and further behind than when he was at home with me. Facing facts - I do not have the skills yet to train him for reining or cow work - she does. And I'm scared to send him a long ways away when I can't visit to see his progress. He loves his barn, his trainer - and his job again - all this since June, when he was deemed unrideable, because of the bad incidents. Now he's walking, jogging, loping, sliding, and spinning.
I've been on him myself, and never felt more comfortable on a green horse - even one of my own. So, he's staying with her - and I'm willing to take a gamble on the great team that those two make. She asks, he responds happily. This is NOT a post flaming BNT's - I know a few wonderful ones - just limited in our area to someone who will take on an Arabian, and really get to know the horse without pounding the tar out of the horse. This is a post celebrating and commenting on talented young unknowns - and our faith in them and our beloved horses, to take them where they need to go in their careers.
Thoughts, questions, comments welcome.
