Pikasso (*Emanor x Paleczka by *Algomej x Palapejczyk by *Europejczyk) a four year old gelding, was in his first race this Tuesday at Delaware Park. He is owned by my daughter, Shannon Swann and her husband Robert. He is being trained by the very well known Lynn Ashby. The race was for a mile which is a good distance for a first time horse.
He went to the post at 7-2 and broke from the number one position in good form. As the horses made it onto the back of the track, one could see that the horse in front of him on the rail was fading and it took him back with him. Pikasso then was dead last and had to go out and around most of the field before a hole opened up coming down the stretch. He then turned on a blast of speed and barely (by a nose) missed being second. Another stride and he would have overtaken the second place horse.
It was very exciting to see my daughter's and son-in-law's enthusiasm and excitement with the performance of Pikasso. And as if I wasn't cheering him on....two generations of Canterbury Farm breeding...!
Lynn Ashby was delightful and has done a good job guiding the gelding's progress. Shannon has been his exercise rider for his training period so has a lot invested in his abilities. Pikasso will race again in a shorter distance race next Tuesday, I believe 6 furlongs.
Not bad for the first time racing! Congrats to Shannon, Robert, Lynn and PIKASSO.
