i want to start a arabian breeding farm i have experience with horses and a great eye for quality i currently have an arabian mare with great blood lines that include Sanadik El Shaklan, two crosses to El Shaklan, Kayoum, Khemosabi, Bay El Bey, three crosses to Bay-Abi, and one to El Hilal. i would make you co-owner on her i have a small farm in arlington washington i would need help getting the place setup for it, moneys tight so as copartner you would have to help there as well, my main objective is to get another mare and breed them i would also like to eventually get a stallion as copartner you would get half the money from the sale of any foal sold and free breeding's to any stallion acquired during are copartnership.

My status

I currently have a Sanadik daughter as well, she's going to foal in March, and a Pure Polish filly.

As for partnership be very careful with it. Make sure you know what each person is responsible for, especially right now with all the problems with the economy. When my friend gets back to California, we are talking about working on Incorporation for the ranch, and all of that good stuff.

This is an interesting topic, something I've considered numerous times given my situation. As a young person trying to get started with some really good quality stock, a partner would definitely help financially especially where the stallions are concerned. I would be curious to hear from anyone who is currently involved in a working parnership, it would be interesting to hear of all of the legalities that need to be considered, as well as what the general agreement is in terms of sharing of care costs, promotional costs, decisions, etc... What if one "share-holder" wanted more rights than the other? Say, for instance, one partner actually bred the horse and was the original sole owner. What if they wanted more say in the decisions to protect the horse from being over-used? Gosh, if I sat and really thought about everything I've been pondering in regards to a partnership, there'd be a list of questions a mile long! LOL

Anyone looking in on this topic that is/has already been in a partnership and want to weigh in???

The fact that, in this economic climate, you can't do this on your own is telling you all you need to know. Most people are cutting back or going out of business and GIVING their animals away. If you can't afford to breed and keep everything you breed for an extended period of time, you probably shouldn't breed, let alone try to open a breeding farm just now.

I don't mean to sound rude or harsh but you probably need to rethink your current plan.

And I would NEVER go in partnership with anyone, just too many pitfalls.

I'm currently in a partnership, not horse related, but it still applies. EVERYTHING! and I mean everything must be in writing and perfectly clear right from the start. Who takes what percentage, makes which decisions - and there will be a lot of them. Think stall drapes, how many manure forks, what color buckets, when to worm, shots, cheap jumps or really good ones, where to advertise, what type of grain and supplements, the list goes on and on. The little things pile up really fast and your partner will be taking advantage of them. Of course the partner will be certain that you are taking advantage of him or her too. Personal horse is no big deal until one partner has two and the other has 8. Boarding space and food going out more for one than the other. You're not spending as much time working with the horses as I am. Yea but I just cleaned the office and did the books while you were playing on horseback. You get the idea. Think of a couple of kids trying to share toys. I have two other partners and it took a while to iron out our differences, and it's still not perfect (5 years in Feb). A silent partner (think investor) is better, but remember they want to MAKE MONEY!

Best of luck, Mike
