We saw a demonstration of cowboy mounted shooting a couple years ago at the Iowa Horse fair and my husband was aw struck. He would love to do this, my husband is an avid gun collector and hunter. His biggest problem is he doesn't ride... not that he doesn't want to, I just need to get our older mare saddled up and give him some "lessons".
He really got excited when he noticed that one of the horses in the article (in modern arabian horse) was a Bey Shahn son.... and we have a 2 year old Bey Shahn daughter
We don't know how to get involved in this or where to find anyone close to us. We would love to go watch these events more often if we could find some.... sigh

Jacinta, if you poke around on the Cowboy Mounted Shooting webpage you can find clubs and dates for rides
IA Cowboy Mounted Shooting The brief conversations that I've had with shooters, they say if you can pop a whip off the horse then you've got a good start at training. I think the hardest thing is for people to trust their horse enough to let go of the reigns. We tend to forget that our legs and seat are the most important things when riding. If you have a horse that will let you crack a whip and move off your le I'd say you're ahead of most! LOL!

I wish my horses were "gun broke" but I no longer know anyone who knows how to do this type of training. The feral pigs are really a problem in this area. I have been told that hunting them on horseback is really the best way to go about it.
We have lots of wild hogs out here too. People use pit bulls to hunt them. About 2 months ago we had to go to my boyfriend's mom's house b/c a wild hog got their potbellied pig p/g - she had a litter and we got to bring one of the babies home.
I've been on lots of trail rides when we've scared hogs up, more than deer! I'm always affraid my Catahula will get into it with a hog though. I keep thinking of the scenes from Old Yeller....
