I was at TSC over the weekend looking through their books since it looked like they got some new ones in, for once! LOL! Anyway, I picked up this awesome book called Braiding Manes and Tails - A Visual Guide to 30 Basic Braids. It is a great book and I highly recommend it since there really is not a book out there that I have seen that gives play by play visual guide and is VERY understandable.

My goal this winter is to master tail braiding. I can braid a mean mane and forelock in many ways but can not get the tails done worth anything. So, when I saw this book and turned to the Pin Wheel (love them) tail I have made it my goal this winter. I started out this afternoon on Mystery with a normal French Braid with the Wrap Finish. I must say, I did a decent job for a first timer at it (see pictures below). Just have to work on the top and getting it smooth.

I just thought I would pass on the book info to anyone that is interested in a good braiding book that will not break the pocket book!

Happy Braiding!

LOL! You crack me up! smile.gif

I totally need to learn tails. I was at a "AA" show a few weeks back and saw all the wonderful tails braided...which got the bug in me. I fell in love with the Pin Wheel Finish a long time ago and saw a few at that show .... uuugh, I need to master it. smile.gif

I hope you get the book, it is worth it. That link I posted is a great price on it too. It has some great mane braids as well.....especially for pulled manes.

Ooh, I think I might just have to get that!

I can do hunter plaits and dressage buttons, but for some reason I just cannot do an underhand french braid. So unless I pull my boy's mane (I probably won't), I need loads of practice.

My favorite book is Susan Harris' "Grooming to Win". That is how I learned to braid. And then the video called Lucky Braids is REALLY worth buying or borrowing, it made my braids 10X better and easier!

Thanks. I ordered one for Pam. Got to keep my hair cut so she doesn't practice on me! biggrin.gif

So, I decided to try it out on Moudy's tail...since he has a wry tail and usually looks like poo-poo braided.

He is not as clean as Mystery, sorry...he had a mud bath today and is VERY wooly...but I did have some fun playing with his tail. His tail is very different than Mystery's so it was a bit of a challenge. He has lots of little hairs where Mystery's has more long ones.

I did the same braid and started up higher to the dock, due to the nature of an Arabian's tail and like I said Moudy has lots of little hairs. But here are the results...

I would love to see others results if you are trying braiding at all. I am going to do some mane stuff as well...but please post pictures of your braiding jobs!

Those tails are looking really good. I get paid to braid tails at shows and I used to have a hard time starting the braid. Then I figured out that it really helps if you make your first middle piece by banding two pieces in the middle from each side. I hope that makes sense.
