My status

As most of you know I love to watch the news and pick a horse as my fav for the KD. I chose Nobiz and he didn't do so well but that's the way it goes. Part of the fun for me is gathering friends and family around to watch the race. My family in Portland picks horses too and we compare notes etc.

Last Sat. I bought goodies and planted my butt in front of the TV to watch all the pre-derby shows. After waiting 1 1/2 hours last Sunday for the Barbaro special on NBC I was mad cause they re-scheduled it due to hockey. Then I messed up and rushed home on Friday to watch it. It was scheduled for Saturday. As you can see I sound blonde about now.

As the day progressed Sat. all the picks had been made. My dad chose Street Sense, cause he was a stock broker and he said you have to have street sense to make money, he he.

My son Alex chose one horse in the morning and his pick changed about 10 times before the race started. My hubby said he was gonna run to the store. The gall of him to march into the house with only 5 minutes to spare before the race. He started telling me about some horse and I told him to tell me later, he was interupting my concentration. I still can't believe I said that.

About an hour before the running our local TV station started cutting in with tornado warnings. Man, what were they thinking?? I emailed the station to tell them if they broke in during the actual 2 minutes of the race I was gonna visit them and it wouldn't be pretty. OK, truth here, I wrote the email but didn't mail it, I'm a chicken at heart.

Well, all this commotion and the increasing aggitation was pure delight for my 12 year old. He was lovin his torqued off momma, egging me on. Well, now I had storms approaching, tornados, heavy rain, the works plus a TV station butting in and a non stop laughing son. Not a good combo. My son and hubby had the car keys ready cause if the station announcement cut off my race viewing they were gonna get as far away from our house as possible.

Then, the elec started flickering. It was more than this old lady could handle. I called my dad, who was watching with my older son in Portland and told them to have the phone ready to hold up in case the power went out or the station broke in. No kidding, they were laughing their ars's off.

One minute before the gates opened poof, the TV station weather guy took his life in his hands to announce the latest warning. I was out of my seat hitting redial on my phone. I told my dad to hold the phone up.

Miracles never cease, the race was on now and I could see it. Everyone was laughing so hard they missed lots of the race but not me. Good thing our blinds were shut, people driving by would have seen a crazy lady jumping up and down holding a phone.

My horse didn't win but dad's did. Before hanging up he said I could call him anytime for tips on picking winners, ha ha very funny dad.

I'm taking reservations for next years Derby. Come spend the day with me, the circus will begin at noon.

Visit me at my new digs...

Very funny story Mo!!!! I too love the Derby! I have to say my intial pick changed after Friday's races. Street Sense became my fav after his jockey won on Friday. Then I saw the story behind Street Sense and I really wanted him to win!!!!! Let me tell you, when the race started and he was in 19th place, my hubby had a field day with that!!! I kept saying, just watch wise guy, this jockey always rides the rail and wouldn't you know it, it was like the parting of the red sea or something and he made his move, WaaaaaaaHoooooooooooo! Great Derby Day for me!!!! Hubby went for the long shot and low and behold if that horse didn't come in 4th! If he's entered at the Belmont he may just be my pick! I love the Derby!

I agree Tam. I liked nobiz cause of trainer Barclay Tagg. He is a great horseman and I figured he would not bring a horse to the derby unless he thought they had a chance. The book Funny Cide is a good read!

Watching Ss come from behind and win was so great. Kindove a freak win up there with the best, amazing to replay.

I think if SS gets through the Preakness and wins he might have a chance at the 3crown, something we all need as hope fades each year.

Let's meet in chat to watch the race in 2 weeks.

I would love to!!! I'm hoping my show schedule doesn't get in the way! I know they'll have the Preakness on in the bar, so if my wireless internet works there you're on!

I think SS has a better shot at winning the Preakness than the Belmont. He looked to be a little fatigued at the end of the Derby. Swapping leads is a sign of tired legs. Hopefully he'll get a clean start and an earlier break for the lead in the Preakness. I just love this time of year!

Did anyone else catch the Barbaro special? I cried thru the whole thing. Every time Michael Matz talked about him he was on the verge of tears, it just tore at my heart strings. Barbaro's owners, what great people, God Bless them, they wanted the best for him. What a great horse, may he live forever in hearts of every Derby lover!!!!!!
