Hello Everyone! It is with sadness I tell you about my wonderful Arab mare, Tsoignee out of Ivanhoe Satan. I have cherished our relationship for the past 12 years. A couple weeks ago, she fell out from under me while we were riding on pavement near my home. She seemed ok a the time and a neighbor came and picked us up with her trailer.

My vet came out to check her knees and she's diagnosed with chronic arthritis. One of her knees has a small lump on the front of the knee. She is on a regimen of MSM, chrondroitin/glucosamine and yucca powder. I must bute her if I want to ride but I am hesitant. I don't want us to go down again like we did. I'm still hurting. I can only imagine her pain.

She is my spirit partner and I love her dearly. She is trained to my voice and verbal commands. It took me years to get her to this point. I have a quarter horse mare, do you think I will have the same success training her?

I'm from Northern California in the lovely Sierra Foothills. Our horses are on our property and we are able to go for local rides.

Saddened,
Linda

I think any horse will become bonded.. It's what you have inside that gave you that bond... and that is inside every horse... just not in every human...

Best wishes..

Hello Linda

Welcome to the forum! I too am from Northern California (35 miles Southeast of Sacramento) and have a 25 yr old stallion with severe arthritis in his hocks as well as a 35% rotation to the right front coffin. We keep him happy and confortable on daily doses of Finish Line HA and BL Solution. You might try the BL Solution instead of Bute, it seems to work just as good, but does not have the side effects of Bute.

Good luck and I hope both you and your mare are feeling better real soon.

Welcome! I am just over the "hill" in Reno! I am going threw something similar as my 27 yr olds arthitis is severe now also. I have her on cosiquin and it seems to have helped some.
mysticrch,Is the BL Solution something I can get from a catalog or is it by the vet? Thanks Mer

You can get it from a catalog or your local feed store. I get mine from http://www.americanlivestock.com/pc-16368-...-l-pellets.aspx

It comes in liquid or pellets. The only caution for it is DO NOT feed to pregnant mares.

welcome to ABN, our own little slice of Arabian heaven, here! I, too, have a geriatric mare. I am blessed that she is not only still quite agile, but shows no signs of slowing down. She runs, gallops, bucks, kicks up her heels and is super fluid and smooth moving. I hope the suggestions offered here help her to get back to her normal self. I use the chondroitin/glucosamine/MSM and Omega-3 combo for myself and the improvement in suppleness and lessening in joint pain is nothing short of amazing. Good luck and keep us posted on your mare's progress, OK?

I'm overwhelmed with all the good wishes and advice. I will try the BLT or was it BT? Geesh, I'll just reread the post. th_fathorsey.gif

I had to laugh when you asked if the stuff was BLT, that is my favourite sandwhich, hahaha.

Hope you can find something to make your mare more comfortable.

In the mean time welcome aboard. I look forward to your posts.
