We took in an abandoned dog a few weeks ago, an elderly couple either passed away, moved, or something but their home and some possessions were auctioned off, after the auction my parents noticed a dog running around. The neighbor kids started shooting BB guns at him and my parents feared he would get hit by a car, we have a nice dog pen that was empty so they brought him out. (yep these are the same parents who very often bring up the amount of animals I have.

Waldo is a great dog, obedient, loves our family, does not chase the horses, and gets along with our other dogs. We can not leave him loose because we too live on a road that people tend to drive fast on. He is a medium sized dog weighing maybe 30 lbs with limitless energy.

Waldos only flaw is he barks and barks and barks and howls and barks, never shuts up...... UNLESS we are either outside where he can see us or he is running loose. We do let him out about an hour or more a day, we walk him through our hay fields, but even after an hour of non stop running he still will bark.

So to keep my sanity and keep our neighbors from wanting to do bodily harm to us. I wondered if anyone has a bark collar for a med. sized dog they would like to either sell or loan out to me. wink.gif

I WORK ANIMAL CONTROL AS A PROFESSION... JUST A COUPLE OF SUGGESTIONS:

FOR A "BARK" COLLAR- BUY THE ONES THAT USE CITRONELLA, USUALLY AVAILABLE AT YOUR MAJOR PET STORES. THE SHOCK COLLARS CAN BE PAINFUL TO SOME OF THE MORE SENSITIVE DOGS.

I HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH ONE OF MY DOGS... GOOGLE "DOGGIE DAZZER" IT'S A HIGH PITCHED DEVICE THAT HUMANS CAN'T HEAR BUT WORKS REALLY WELL AS A TRAINING DEVICE....IT'S ALSO GOOD TO TAKE TRAIL RIDING AS IT CAN BE USED ON THE OCCASIONAL DOG THAT LIKES TO RUN UP TO HORSES.
DOG DAZZER
GOOD LUCK!

Try Dogtra.com not the cheapest but good quality that doesn't get the signal mixed up. They are waterproof. They don't hurt the dog, we used them at the training kennel I worked for. We would have to test the collar against our own hands before putting them on the dogs. Where injuries came into play was when the collars were not put on tight enough, by clients. The injuries were from the collar rubbing and causing sores.

We mainly used the regular training collars, and would use a low setting first, and only go to a higher setting if it was needed because the dogs attention was heightened.

My experience as a vet tech is that they can be an effective last-resort training tool. I do not find that the citronella/lemon or vibrating collars do much, unless the dog is not a big barker- HPSH's article also mentions that. Bark collars ARE NOT PAINFUL- but I would suggest that you feel the shock before you put it on your dog. They are normally a very mild electric shock, but enough to deter the dogs. I use E-collars to train dogs all the time and they are a VERY effective and safe tool. The bark collars are automated E-collars and work well.

Petsafe makes bark collars and a little birdhouse( for dogs confined to a 50' x50' area)
My dogs swim in local waterholes and shorted out the collars, if not removed when out and about.
The little birdhouse bark deterrent works on our most persistent yapper.
Go online, Walmart,Target, pet stores, I found one at Walmart.
It's cheaper than buying individual collars for my pack and the covers strays that come through at night.
