In my efforts to find my 5 year old a western saddle I came to the conclusion I have no idea what size seat she is.... which is kinda sorta important.

How do you measure for this?

Thanks you so much
Jacinta

I'm pretty sure she just needs to sit in it and figure out what's comfortable. There's no formula - you could have two people that are both 5' tall and need two different seat sizes.

If you are looking for western, 12" is the typical for really young riders, 14" for a little older pre-teen .

Thank you ....

I know idealy finding a saddle for her to sit would be great but we don't have any tack stores close by to do this. There is a feed store about 40 minutes away but the likely hood of them haveing a youth saddle is pretty slim....

Well if you REALLY wanted to get a somewhat accurate measure have her sit in your saddle and then measure from the back of her rump and the cantle and subtract that from the size of your saddle.

So have her sit in the saddle as she normally would and then measure rump to cantle and subtract. I am thinking that a 12 is the norm

If you take a 5 year old to try saddles she'll think the saddle with the pink seat is far more comfortable than the brown one....

Mommy, please can I have this one...

OMG Burgundy..... that looks almost identical to the one she picked out..... I gave her a Jeffers catalog and told her to circle everything she wanted (wrong move by the way) and she picked out the saddle with the pink seat.....

For a young rider, get something with a good deep seat. We got my daughter a 10.5 seat when she was 5 but the saddle seat was really shallow and I didn't much care for it. She is now 8 and fits comfortably in a 12, although I'll be buying her a 14 inch seat soon because she is fine with that as well and it will give us a good many years before needing another upgrade again. wink.gif

Maybe this link will help: http://www.western-saddle-guide.com/fitting-the-rider.html

good luck!! smile.gif
