Hey guys I could use your knowledge. My horse hasn't eaten his last 2 grain feedings. He has lots of gut noises, both sides. Normal temp, normal attitude, looks ok. He's recently dropped some weight. He's very picky with hay but is eating hay pellets. If I hand feed the grain he will eat it. Still very piggy over treats. Any thoughts or ideas? He's never gone off feed before but has always been picky with hay.

In our area- Lyme and Ehrlichiosis would be my biggest concerns. I have had too many horses with a variety of symptoms with high titers and they responded well to treatment. I would get your vet out to pull a titer, and maybe start the horse on Doxy until you got the test back. Ulcers or teeth would be the next concern.

actually, I am having the bo take him temp tonight - if it's high I suspect Ehrlichia. He was previously treated for uclers (scoped neg) and treatment didn't seem to make any difference health wise for him. Teeth were just floated a month ago - normal, minor points no hooks. Suppose I should have bo check mouth (duh) - thank you.

The start of ulcers... try the people kind of medicine (ask your vet, it's much less expensive) and he will respond and be normal in a week, have teeth checked too.

Cindy

Sorry... just read your reply... but ulcer - stop eating problem can come on quick.

if it is ulcers try 100 mls of pepto bismal. have the teeth checked for abscesses and also try beet pulp for wieght. Easier on the gums. How old is your horse, condition, vaccinations, worming, and water consumption?

Is he drinking? something in his mouth could be bothering him.... as if he got something stuck in a gum... or a tooth was cracked when dentist used speculum (sp)? or feed went bad? cat peed on the bag? LOL

Not all horses run a fever with the tick borne diseases. I have now had 5 horses with one or the other disease without an obvious temp when I have been checking them before the vet came out. I now start doxy at the first sign of symptoms:(
