My status

What is the youngest age that a horse can be ridden?

Or, what is the youngest age of a horse that you've ridden?

My breeder said that my mare used to "bug" her and that she got on Sasha at about 2 years old for short periods of about 20 minutes, if that.

I mean those with arabian crosses with heights of 15 or 16.1 hands at 16 mos. and such, are you tempted to "hop" on because they're big and tall?

Shan
Check thier knees to see if closed. You diffently will feel if there is a gap. When closed, you can start riding them. With Arabs, this can happen from 3-4 or even older. Anything younger I would not try. In different breeds, all develope differently. Now you can get a 2 year old use to a saddle but from there that would be it.

Sorry - Shah not Shan - notice the h is just above the n. Bad typing as usual.

We start my young horses at right about 30 months.........they spend 90 days on ground training (lunging, bitting, long lines) and are ridden after that is going well. if the horse is not mentally or physically ready for more training, they go back to the pasture unti spring. two years old is too soon

Oh boy. Not this discussion again smile.gif I've seen it rehashed over and over and over on so many forums and it usually has
a tendency of getting ugly - since everyone has their own opinion.

Instead of relying on opinion, I choose to go off of "fact" or the scientifics. Dr. Deb Bennett wrote an excellent article about
the maturation of the skeletal system of the horse. Click Here to View the Article

Fact is there are MANY growth plates on a horse (or person) and you can't just be concerned with the knees. The article
gives a great chart on when the growth plates harden - you may want to read that before jumping on your babies early.

For my own horses, we do not ride them until they are 3, and then I want knee xrays. I also want to make sure that they are ready for it mentally. There is no reason to rush it. I would rather sit out a show season or let them grow up for another year then start them before they are ready.

I am personally never tempted, I will not get on one of my horses untill they are at least 3 and I am only 97 pounds..... The last mare I broke was 4 before I even got up on her, I just felt she wasnt ready smile.gif

With my Arabians, I wait until they are 3 or 4. They might wear a saddle at 3, but not a rider. And I won't ride them until the vet has determined that all growth plates are 'closed' or at an acceptable place for bearing weight. I want my horses to last until their 30's not break down by 15.

I don't put mine in serious saddle training until they are close to 3, and am never on them before they are a full 3 yrs old. Frequently they are more like 4. However I do tons of ground work/desensitizing etc... before all of that, so that the day I decide they are physically ready, they have already had a lot of mental training and have a head start. I want them to be able to be 'working' horses for LONG time, and not breakdown in the teens due to early riding.
